Since the first commercial carbon dioxide (CO2) system was established in 1925 by its pioneer, Walter Kidde, CO2 systems have been in use for many years.

The versatility of CO2 systems is their main advantage. CO2 systems can be used locally (in places without walls, like printing presses, dip tanks, spray booths, and quench tanks), as well as in whole flood systems for area protection and flexible hose line systems for more affordable fire protection.

By creating a blanket of heavy gas that absorbs heat from the fire and lowers atmospheric oxygen levels to the point where combustion is impossible, carbon dioxide systems inhibit fire. Free of damage. Carbon dioxide, a naturally occurring atmospheric component, dissolves into the atmosphere, enabling a nearly instantaneous return to "business as usual" without the need for an expensive cleanup or the cost of asset damage from suppressant residue.

It is colorless, odorless, flavorless, non-conductive, and chemically inert.
